Mental Health Champion Training

What is a Mental Health Champion?

A mental health champion is someone who has undergone training to provide support, raise awareness, and promote mental health within the workplace. These champions are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to assist colleagues who may be struggling with mental health issues or stress, guiding them to appropriate resources.

They also play a key role in implementing preventative strategies to safeguard employee wellbeing, advocating for mental health awareness, and supporting colleagues in times of crisis. Each champion may tailor their approach based on their personal strengths and the needs of the organisation.

Key responsibilities of mental health champions may include:

  • Challenging the stigma around mental health in the workplace.
  • Advocating for better understanding and policies related to employee wellbeing.
  • Organising events and fostering communication to promote awareness of both positive and negative mental health practices.

Difference Between a Mental Health Champion and a Mental Health First Aider

The terms "mental health champion" and "mental health first aider" are often used interchangeably, depending on the organisation’s preference and the specific training received. Both roles are crucial in reducing stigma and promoting mental health in the workplace, while offering direct support to colleagues during mental health crises.

A mental health champion’s core values typically include:

  • Supporting colleagues by identifying options and directing them to professional services.
  • Encouraging open discussions about mental health and wellbeing at work.
  • Raising awareness and challenging the stigma around mental health issues.
  • Modelling positive mental health practices and offering support during emotionally difficult times.
  • Promoting preventative measures to create a mentally healthy workplace environment.
