Mental health is an integral part of overall well-being, and it's completely normal for it to fluctuate over time.
Just like our physical health, mental health exists on a spectrum, ranging from good mental health to poor mental health, and everyone experiences challenges or struggles at some point in their lives.
Integrating Mental Health First Aid provision into traditional first aid training can significantly enhance the overall effectiveness of emergency response and care in your workplace.
What do we do on our Mental Health First Aid courses?
We start by educating participants about the frequency of mental health issues and the importance of recognising and addressing them. This can help reduce stigma and encourage open communication about mental health concerns.
We teach participants how to recognise signs and symptoms of common mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Just as with physical health emergencies, early recognition is key to providing timely support.
We train participants in active listening and effective communication techniques, encouraging them to approach individuals in distress with empathy, non-judgment, and respect.
We also emphasise the importance of self-care for both the mental health first aider and the individual in distress. We teach techniques for managing stress and building resilience, such as deep breathing exercises and mindfulness practices.
We familiarise participants with local mental health resources and support services, such as hotlines, counselling centres, and community organisations. We encourage them to proactively connect individuals in need with these resources including peer support groups, or access to mental health professionals for consultation.
We offer follow-up support and additional training opportunities to reinforce mental health first aid skills. This could include refresher courses and bitesize email top tips.
By integrating mental health first aid support into traditional first aid training, you can create a more holistic approach to emergency response and support individuals in both physical and psychological distress.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has just released an updated version of L74 – Guidance on The Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. This update emphasizes the importance of considering mental health in the workplace, alongside physical first aid
