The Concept of MHFA
Mental Health First Aid is a training program that teaches participants how to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health issues, provide initial support, and guide individuals toward professional help when necessary. Developed by Australian mental health educators Betty Kitchener and Anthony Jorm in 2000, MHFA has since been adopted by countries worldwide, including the UK, USA, and Canada.
Just as first aid does not make one a doctor, MHFA does not train individuals to be therapists or counsellors. Instead, it empowers people to act as a bridge between someone in distress and the professional help they may need. MHFA courses generally cover a wide range of mental health conditions and crises, teaching people how to offer non-judgmental, compassionate support.
